POSITION: Medical Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Primary Care

LOCATION: 1575 Blue Hill Avenue, Mattapan, MA 02126

REPORTS TO: Director of Clinical Health Services

TYPE: Full and Part Time

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

Summary:

Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant performs a variety of direct patient care services, including but not limited to vital sign and may assist in patient preparation for procedures as well as chaperone the providers and works closely with other offices, internal and external departments and programs, to assure coordinated services. Clerical duties associated with this position are completing forms, lab requisitions, answering the telephone and send DNKA letters (did not keep appointment). If the Medical Assistant possesses special language skills, he/she will be required to provide translation support as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. 90% Direct Patient Services and Clinical Administrative Duties 

• Perform patient care services such as vital signs, administer nebulizer treatments, weighs, EKG’s, O2 saturation, hearing/vision test, peak flow measures and finger stick/blood glucose levels, etc. 
• Document initial history, i.e., baseline complaint, and purpose of visit and direct patient care services provided by the Medical Assistant in the patient medical record. 
• Reconciliation of the patient’s medications during the initial assessment. 
• Assist provider with procedures and chaperone as necessary. 
• Perform urine pregnancy test, routine urinalysis and rapid strep test. 
• Prepare examination room, prep patient for examination. 
• Collect, label and prepare specimens and cultures for the lab. 
• Provide translation as needed. 
• Check schedules prior to the next clinic day to determine the patient’s need for the visit. 
• Huddling with providers about their scheduled patients.

2. 5% Administrative Duties 

• Stock examination rooms with clinical supplies. 
• Answer telephone, take and disseminate messages as needed. 
• Monitor and complete flow sheets as directed by provider. Mattapan Community Health Center.
• Participates in Health Center meetings, as required. 
• Assigned to call center as designated by the nurse supervisor and communicate with nurses and providers regarding calls designated for a particular provider.

3. 5% Provision of Continuing Education/In-service 

• Maintains and expands current level of professional knowledge of theory and practice through continuing education programs/In-services. 
• Precepts Medical Assistant students, as assigned. 
• Participates in individual or group teaching. 
• Participates on Health Center Committee. 
• Maintain Certification (CMA) through a certified credentialing agency.
• Performs other related duties as required or assigned by the Clinical Health Services Director or Nurse Manager.

Requirements

Possess a certificate of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant Program and a current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Must be certified as a CMA or CRMA. 

The ideal candidate must have one year of recent clinical experience in a hospital or community health care setting, must be flexible, organized, and able to stand on their feet for extended periods of time and be culturally/ethnically sensitive. 

Bilingual in Haitian Creole or Spanish is an asset but not necessary.
